The first meeting of academic
writing courses is on Thursday, February 17, 2022. This first meeting was
started with introductions from students who participated in the exchange of
students who took academic writing courses. After they finished getting
acquainted one by one followed also by several students from Sultan Ageng
Tirtayasa University who welcomed the arrival of these student exchange
students.
Then continued with a question and
answer between lecturers and students. Mr. Udi displays the question on the
screen then gives the student time to search for the answer and then the
answers given by the student will be discussed together.
Here are the questions and answers I got. What is academic writing?
Academic writing is pure, short, absorbed, organized, and financed up by
advance. Its determination is to help the reader’s understanding. It has a
formal tone and style, but it is not multifaceted and does not require the use
of long sentences and complex vocabulary. What are the characteristics of
‘good’ academic writing? Planned and focused: responds to the question and
demonstrates an understanding of the topic. Structured: is intelligible,
written in a logical demand, and brings together related points and material.
Evidenced: demonstrates information of the subject area supports opinions and influences
with evidence and is referenced accurately. Formal in tone and style: uses
appropriate language and tenses, and is clear, concise, and balanced. What
common problems do most students encounter in dealing with academic writing?
The analysis of the problem they challenged in academic writing is based on four classes of common problems: plagiarism, grammatical errors,
lexical problems, and deficiency of planning. What about ‘digital writing?’
what do you understand about this? Digital writing is a research area that
includes information and practice of writing with for original media and ICT:
use of word processors and authoring software, multimedia composition,
communication strategies, and skills in new languages that are derived.
Above is an overview of how the first meeting of academic writing went.
I hope in the future I will master more about how to write correctly, especially in
writing about academic writing. And I hope also the difficulties that I will
face in the future will be resolved well and I get the knowledge of it.
