What is formal writing, what is informal, what are the characteristics of these two types, examples of each type, etc? First, what is academic writing? Academic writing skills involve strong structure, excellent grammar, and a consistent stylistic approach. The characteristics contain a formal tone, use of third-person rather than first-person perspective, clear focus on the issue or topic rather than the author’s view, and precise word choice.
