Gender equality is the view in which
both men and women are treated equally, are not distinguished, can receive
equal rights and obligations, and can have equal opportunities. But sometimes
women are always considered to be under men, this is also commonly found around
me, especially those who live in the village. They still adhere to the thought
that women do not need high school because in the end women will serve their
husbands and take care of children. In fact, women can also go to high school
to achieve their goals, make their own money, and get married.
The main reason there is still
discrimination against gender that mainly occurs in women is that there is
still a patriarchal culture in the mindset of society. This patriarchal culture
teaches that men should be more domineering than women. This gender
discrimination extends into every spare scope of life order, such as family,
education, culture, and politics.
Education is an investment for a
person to be able to get a decent life in the future, investment in this is
also of course not only useful for yourself but also others. Education should
have no gender restrictions for men and women. In addition to the right to
education, actually in the order of social life such as small organizations,
large organizations, and within the scope of government, women have now proven
a lot in terms of occupying certain positions in an institution and they can carry
out these obligations properly and carried out.
In the social sphere, women often
get unfair treatment. The position of women is always placed at number two
below men. This is evidenced by the existence of a lot of violence, verbal and
non-verbal sexual abuse that seems to continue to haunt where women are. Violence
or sexual harassment that occurs to a woman occurs because of the value system
that occupies women as beings who are considered weaker than men. It is still
found that women are controlled, exploited, and enslaved by men. Rape is still
quite popular today. Victims who should get attention, protection, and mental
help are often blamed. They blame it on the premise that it is women who
stimulate men to commit such abuses. But actually, men also play a big role in
these cases of abuse.
So, the conclusion is that gender differences are not the main issue in gender equality. Women and men have the same rights and rights in carrying out their daily lives. They deserve an education, a decent social life, and are fairly enforced. And also, the handling of this gender problem cannot be overcome by one party alone, but there needs to be cooperation between the community and the government. The government created a strict law for perpetrators of gender injustice and the community to participate in the gender enforcement movement utilizing education and slowly eliminating the patriarchal culture that is still inherent in the mindset of Indonesian society.
