The third meeting of Academic Writing took place on Thursday, March 10, 2022. At this meeting, we discussed the difference between descriptive writing and academic writing. We discuss the characteristics and examples of the two materials. The students are asked to find teaching materials on the internet which will then be written in chat room meetings. Which will then be discussed jointly between lecturers and students.
Here's what was done at the third
meeting:
1. What is Descriptive
Writing?
Descriptive writing is a fictional device in which the author uses particulars
to paint a picture with their words. This process will deliver readers with
descriptions of people, objects, and events through the use of suitable details.
2. What are the
characteristics of Descriptive Writing?
Good descriptive writing contains several vivid sensory details that
paint a picture and demand all the reader's senses of sight, hearing, touch,
smell, and taste when appropriate.
3. What is the
example of Descriptive Writing
·
My dog’s fur was like silk against my skin
and her black coloring shone, absorbing the sunlight and reflecting it like a
pure, dark mirror.
·
Her last smile to me wasn’t a sunset. It
was an eclipse, the last eclipse, noon dying away to darkness where there would
be no dawn.
4. What is
Academic Writing?
Academic writing is writing that evaluates and assesses information
usually from multiple sources, to grow an argument.
5. What are the
characteristics of Academic Writing?
·
A clear and confident refusal to accept the
inferences of other writers without evaluating the arguments and evidence that
they provide.
·
A balanced presentation of reasons why the
conclusions of other writers may be accepted or may need to be preserved with
caution.
·
A clear presentation of your evidence and
argument, leading to your conclusion, and
·
A recognition of the limitations in your
evidence, argument, and conclusion.
6. What is the
example of Academic Writing?
1) Research
Proposals
Research proposals are an outline of the
proposed research of a Ph.D. candidate, a secluded researcher, or someone in
suspense to obtain a research grant.
2) Dissertations
Dissertations is a body of writing that
represents original research and is generally written as part of a Ph.D. or
master’s program.
3) Abstracts
Abstracts are a component of other forms of
academic writing, such as scholarly articles and theses. The abstracts act as a
complete outline of your paper in paragraph form.
4) Articles
Academic articles are parts of writing
intended for publication in academic journals or other academic sources.
Above are my search results on the
internet about the discussion discussed in the third meeting. I hope that with
this meeting I will understand more about the difference between descriptive
writing and academic writing.
Hi, Meilita! If you could give more attention by writing in a paragraphs, I think your writing is going to be better.
