The sixth meeting of Academic Writing took place on Thursday, March 31. This meeting was replaced with a Research Talk organized by the International Office of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa with speaker Mr. Christianus I Wayan Eka Budhiartha from Sampoerna University. The topic of this Research Talk is "Vocabulary Profile and Lexical Bundles of EFL Academic Writing: A Corpus-based Study in English Teaching.

Here is the material presented by the speaker that I got. The vocabulary study has three differences in research, research is lexical knowledge, literacy, and metalinguistics awareness.

Formulaic language is defined as a set of words that are "stored and recovered fully from memory at the time of use, rather than being produced or analyzed by language grammar" (Wray and Perkins 2000, 1). Lexical knowledge is the knowledge that can be uttered in words. Circular though this may seem, it delivers a perfectly rational point of parting, for, in line with a long-standing logical tradition it posits communicability as the most typical characteristic of lexical knowledge. Lexical knowledge is thoughtful of or connecting to words or the vocabulary of a language as distinguished from its grammar and construction.

"A safeguarding classification of three or more words" that "often go together in normal discourse" is characterized as a lexical bundle (Biber et al 1999, 990). Lexical bundles help in the formation of meaning in specific conditions and contribute to our perception of text coherence (Hyland 2008, 4).

Literacy, Corson's studies (1986, 1997) established the position of mastering medium to low-frequency Greek or Latin vocabulary to many students' academic achievement. As an effect, academic success is reliant on being able to access and employ a larger lexical register. As the reading and writing demands rise, children who are unable to shift lexical gears and shift from an informal, conversational register to an analytic, academic register have increasing difficulty at school.

Metalinguistics awareness is defined as the facility to reserve oneself from the content of speech to reflect upon and operated the structure of language. Metalinguistics awareness also recognized as metalinguistics ability refers to the ability to consciously reflect on the nature of language. The concept of metalinguistic awareness helps explain the completing and transfer of linguistic knowledge across languages.
